AN online poll following the disruptions caused by Tropical Cyclone Alfred has revealed a sharp division over the idea of building of a bridge connecting the mainland to Russell Island.

The poll found that 52 per cent of more than 2300 respondents supported the construction of a bridge, while 48 per cent were opposed.

The idea of a bridge connecting Russell Island – and potentially North Stradbroke Island – to the mainland has been a hot topic of debate for decades.

Federal Member for Bowman Henry Pike said he had no objection to a bridge, provided conditions were met.

“Firstly, it must have strong popular support, and secondly, it must stack up economically,” he said.

“I’m not convinced either condition has been met at this stage, but with the rapid growth of Russell Island’s population, I foresee a point in the future when both conditions will be met.

“It is ultimately a decision for Russell Islanders to resolve, but I will fight for federal investment in whatever infrastructure the community desires.”

State Member for Redlands Rebecca Young said there were strong opinions on both sides.

“The last report on the bridge project was over 10 years ago, and no new work has been done to establish accurate costings or to assess the environmental impact,” she said.

“Without that critical information, it’s difficult to make a fully informed decision.

“In the short term, let’s focus on the work that can relieve pressure on islanders and improve connectivity without diving into a complex and potentially disruptive bridge project.”

Cr Shane Rendalls pointed out the significant infrastructure challenges, noting the lack of adequate roads on either side of the islands, meaning the final price tag would likely exceed $1 billion.

“I moved to the island because it was an island, but I have no strong view either way,” he said.

“I would be guided by what most people want.”

A Redland City Council spokesperson said the Queensland Government would be the responsible entity for funding and delivering a project of this scale and complexity.

“To date, the Queensland Government has not indicated that it intends to undertake planning investigations or construct a bridge to Russell Island and as such, Council’s position reflects that of the Queensland Government.”

In the early 1980s, the Queensland Government considered building a bridge to North Stradbroke Island.

The issue gained new urgency after disruptions from Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Peter Brackstone expressed frustration over the cost of maintaining island infrastructure.

“Why should the mainland subsidise the lifestyle choice of islanders?” he wrote.

Manu Jacob made the case for improved connectivity, especially for families.

“SMBI is uniquely positioned close to the CBD, making it an ideal place for young families – provided it is well connected,” Mr Jacob said.

Shane Arnold wrote: “For the amount you’d have to pay in tolls, it would certainly not make it worth it. The island lifestyle is just that … don’t like it, move to the mainland.”
