HAVE you ever wondered what life will be like in 25 years? It may not sound like a long time, but it will arrive as surely as night follows day.

You might already be a senior, thinking about retirement. That stage of life often comes sooner than expected – have you made some preparations?

Do you have enough superannuation to draw on, perhaps to pay off your house?

Owning your home is one of the most important goals for any family. If you reach retirement debt-free, even if you rely on Centrelink, life becomes far more manageable. You can cover living expenses more easily and still afford the occasional holiday.

But the world is changing faster than ever. Older seniors will tell you how much things have shifted in the past 60 years, and how, more recently, change seems to be accelerating.

I mentioned in a column earlier this year how the second half of the year always feels quicker than the first. Well, here we are –another week gone, October almost upon us, and 2026 coming fast.

Time is a funny thing. For some, the days drag. For others, life is too busy and time disappears.

We’ve all waited for a kettle to boil, or watched the seconds tick away on a microwave, wondering how much time we waste just waiting.

Unfortunately, many of us don’t plan, save, or invest with the future in mind. The future always seems too far away – until suddenly, you’re living it.

For renters, the years ahead may be especially tough, with rent payments becoming harder to meet.

Some young people are disciplined savers, but many may struggle to buy a home in the coming decades.

Others live for the moment, enjoying the good life now without much thought for tomorrow.

The sobering reality is that most Australians won’t be able to retire early. Retirement may look very different to our working years.

We’re often told we need a seven-figure sum to live comfortably, but in truth, many Australians thrive with less – because they plan carefully and adjust their lifestyle to suit.
