REDLANDS residents are being urged to take action when they see vandalism or anti-social behaviour in local parks—by reporting it to police, not just posting about it on social media.
Following a spate of incidents at William Stewart Park in Thornlands, authorities say online posts alone do not give police the information they need to investigate and take action.
State Member for Redlands Rebecca Young MP said community cooperation was essential.
“Social media might spread awareness, but it doesn’t give police the information they need. If residents want real change, they must report incidents straight to police. That’s how we secure more frontline support, more patrols, and real results,” Mrs Young said.
Police have confirmed they have not received a single report of vandalism at William Stewart Park, despite online discussions.
Following Mrs Young’s intervention, police presence in the area will increase.
Independent Division 3 Councillor Paul Golle said vandalism had a lasting impact, including the removal of the park’s toilet block due to repeated damage and safety concerns.
“This was not a decision taken lightly, but constant vandalism made the structure unsafe. Its removal, just ahead of ex Tropical Cyclone Alfred prevented it from becoming dangerous debris. Council is committed to replacing the facility with a modern structure built to current Australian standards,” Cr Golle said.
Cr Golle said council had also stepped up its response with mobile security patrols, faster repair turnarounds, and design improvements that deter vandalism.
“Every report makes a difference,” Cr Golle said.
“When residents report, Council responds, and police enforce the law. That’s how we keep our parks safe and family friendly.”
Both Mrs Young and Cr Golle praised residents who had already contacted police and council directly, pointing to recent incidents at Thornlands Community Park where quick reporting led to police detaining an offender and council crews immediately repairing damage.
“This shows what works,” Mrs Young said.
“Reports to the right authorities lead to action. Let’s keep that going.”
