FOLLOWING a Government Information Session hosted by Tennis Australia, Division 9 Councillor Jason Colley has revealed key opportunities for advancing sports in the Redlands community.

Cr Colley noted that Tennis Queensland officials commended their longstanding partnership with Redland City Council, emphasising the council’s continuous support.

“Pickleball, in particular, is something which the Redland community has embraced over the past few years,” he said.

“The rapid growth in participation has quickly resulted in a lack of court space.”

Tennis Australia highlighted that tennis and pickleball clubs that have collaborated by sharing facilities and resources have seen both sports flourish.

“Strengthening partnerships between local clubs is likely to be the best approach for delivering the best outcomes in our city also,” Cr Colley said.

Addressing the introduction of alternative forms of tennis like pop tennis, beach tennis, padel tennis, and pickleball, Cr Colley acknowledged the land constraints for sporting facilities in the area.

“Improving accessibility and encouraging residents to maintain an active lifestyle is something we are always looking to do,” he said.

“We are a willing partner and will work with Tennis Queensland and Tennis Australia to support any initiatives they have which will be mutually beneficial.”

He noted the potential of beach tennis, due to the region’s island populations.

He was also pleased to see key council officers attending the session, even during the council shutdown period.

“Having staff who are so committed to their positions and take the responsibility of serving the community seriously is fantastic for our residents,” Cr Colley said.

A highlight for him was speaking with John Millman, the retired Australian tennis professional who famously defeated Roger Federer at the US Open.

“Millman spent his childhood in Sheldon and has fond memories of his time growing up in the Redlands, where his dad taught at Capalaba State College,” he recalled.

“Having competed at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, he is looking forward to us hosting the world in our backyard in 2032.”
