IT was a dramatic and fast-moving day of cricket as 20 wickets fell in a single day during a seesawing contest between Redlands and Ipswich, with both bowling attacks dominating proceedings in conditions that continued to challenge the batters.
Redlands were first to bat and found conditions difficult from the outset, with Brayden Laffan dismissed early.
Damyn Waddups provided resistance at the top of the order with a determined 30, showing composure as wickets continued to fall around him.
Captain Liam Smith made 16 and Jack Sinfield added 18, but Redlands struggled to build momentum under consistent pressure from the Ipswich bowlers.
The middle order battled hard to steady the innings as Redlands looked for momentum through the middle phase, before a late push added some valuable runs at the back end.
Despite the effort, consistent pressure from the Ipswich bowlers ensured the Tigers were eventually dismissed for 135 in the 46th over.
Ipswich bowling was led superbly by Noah Emmerson with four wickets, while Paul Nasser delivered one of the most economical spells seen this season, conceding just eight runs from seven overs.
Rowan Lutter and Harrison Wood each claimed two wickets as Ipswich maintained control throughout the innings.
In reply, Redlands produced a brilliant response with the ball, led by an outstanding performance from Jack Jarvis who tore through the Ipswich lineup to claim five wickets with figures of 16 overs, two maidens, 75 runs and five wickets.
At the other end, James Pullar was equally effective, claiming five wickets of his own with excellent figures of 13.3 overs, 4 maidens, 54 runs and 5 wickets in a tremendous all-round influence on the match.
Mikey McNamara was Ipswich top scorer with 30, while Noah Emmerson added a rapid 30 and Rowan Lutter contributed 20 as Ipswich attempted to build their total.
Despite these efforts, regular wickets and sustained pressure from the Redlands attack ensured Ipswich could not fully break free.
Ipswich were dismissed for 168, giving them a first innings lead of 33 runs after an action-packed day that swung heavily between both sides and showcased just how quickly momentum could change in testing conditions.
Reflecting on the day, James Catlow Elliott said the bowling effort had completely shifted the momentum back towards the Tigers.
“Jack and James bowled unbelievably well and really allowed us to get back into the game,” he said.
“It is disappointing we did not score the runs we would have liked with the bat, but looking ahead to next week we have nothing to lose, and we will take the game on.”
With one more day of cricket remaining, attention now turns to Redlands’ tactics with bat in hand.
The big question is whether the Tigers will roll the dice, look to push for a winning total and set Ipswich a target to chase, with experienced campaigners Leigh Drennan and James Bazley returning to strengthen the batting lineup for the final day.
