REDCITY Roar has been named a finalist for the prestigious 2025 Basketball Queensland Association of the Year award – a historic first for the association and the wider Redlands basketball community.
The announcement was made at the annual Basketball Queensland Awards Night at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, where RedCity was shortlisted alongside Logan, Cairns, Townsville and Southern Districts.
Logan Thunder ultimately claimed the title for the second consecutive year.
Association representatives said being named a finalist alone was a significant milestone, reflecting years of work to grow and strengthen basketball in the region.
“This recognition by the state governing body is a testament to all the hard work done by all the volunteers, the casuals, the clubs including the club committees and the tireless work by our staff and management committee and all those many hours of dedication behind the scenes by everyone,” the association said.
“But also, to all the amazing members who are part of the great RedCity community. It is a great sign that the association is heading in the right direction, and to have this formally recognised is humbling and inspiring for all those involved.”
The finalist recognition caps a standout year for RedCity Roar, marked by major progress both on and off the court.
The association hosted its first-ever family fun day in January, drawing unprecedented engagement from the Redlands community.
Its CUBS Intro to Basketball program has expanded rapidly, with more than 325 children participating so far this year.
Junior club competitions have also continued to grow, bolstered by the launch of a new club, the South Bay Dolphins.
In 2025, RedCity also overhauled its season structure, moving to a Summer and Winter competition model, and introduced a new school holiday camp format aimed at more targeted player development.
The RedCity Roar x Girls Got Game girls-only 3×3 event returned stronger than ever, recording increased participation compared with 2024.
On the court, both the women’s and men’s Queensland State League Division 2 teams reached their respective grand finals and secured promotion to Division 1 for 2026, with the men’s side also finishing as minor premiers for the first time.
The men’s grand final was hosted at the Paul Bancroft Centre before a crowd of more than 900 supporters.
Off the court, RedCity Roar has continued to strengthen its foundations, implementing a range of policy and governance updates to support the association’s long-term development.
Relationships with all levels of government – including councillors, the Mayor, state MPs and the local federal MP – have grown significantly.
The association also formed a key partnership with Life Education Queensland to jointly deliver a Child Safeguarding Project supporting all eight affiliated clubs.
