Unleaded petrol prices have surged to a new record high of almost $2.30 per litre in another blow for households struggling through the cost-of-living crisis.

Apps like Petrol Spy show servos across the city have been charging as much as 229.9 cents per litre for unleaded 91.

About 25 per cent of retailers across greater Brisbane had hiked their unleaded prices to the new record high as of 11am last Thursday.

RACQ General Manager of Advocacy Joshua Cooney called on fuel companies to explain the hike, noting that unleaded prices had exceeded the record set in June last year despite a drop in oil prices.

“RACQ’s quarterly fuel reports consistently show Brisbane has the highest fuel prices of the five major capital cities,” he said.

“Sydney and Melbourne motorists have also experienced a recent spike, yet their prices hovered at 224.9 cents per litre.

“Why are Brisbane motorists being slugged more? We need an answer from fuel companies.

Mr Cooney urged fuel retailers to be fair with motorists during the cost-of-living crisis and set their margins at a reasonable rate.

Only two service stations in Redlands were offering unleaded 91 for less than $2 per litre at the time of going to print on Tuesday afternoon.
