MORE than 60 girls at Ormiston College have sacrificed their ponytails in a heartfelt show of support for breast cancer patients, raising an incredible $54,781 for Mater Chicks in Pink.

A team of six volunteer stylists took to the stage at the Redlands school on October 16, transforming 64 Year 12 students in a fast-paced 30-minute “snip-athon”.

Known as The Chop, the annual event has become a cherished tradition at the college.

The students’ hair is donated to make wigs for women who lose their hair during cancer treatment, while the funds raised support breast cancer research, services, and equipment at Mater hospitals across Queensland.

It was an especially emotional day for Ormiston College teacher Peta Raftery, who underwent treatment for breast cancer at Mater Private Hospital Redland last year.

“I noticed a lump in my breast and immediately went to see my GP, who sent me for a mammogram and ultrasound,” Ms Raftery said.

“Dr Jason Lambley at Mater Private Hospital Redland was amazing, so kind and understanding, and the Mater staff wrapped their arms around with kindness and care.”

Ms Raftery, who had a lumpectomy and now has no evidence of disease, said she remained under regular observation.

She spoke to the students about her journey and expressed deep gratitude for their efforts.

“What the girls are doing – giving of themselves for people they don’t know – is amazing,” she said.

“I am so proud of them.”

Mater Private Hospital Redland Breast Care Nurse Janice Butler, who supported Ms Raftery during her treatment, joined the event.

“It is incredible to see these wonderful young people come together to support women living with breast cancer,” Ms Butler said.

“The money raised for Mater Chicks in Pink will make a real difference to these women.”

Funds raised through Mater Chicks in Pink help to provide services and equipment for breast cancer patients.

The organisation recently funded the purchase of a new Faxitron Trident HD radiography system at Mater Private Hospital Redland, which enhances the accuracy of breast cancer surgery.

Since The Chop began in 2015, Ormiston College students have raised a remarkable $294,000 for Mater Chicks in Pink.

School leaders also thanked stylists from The Hair Chapel and C’ba Hair for generously donating their time to support the event.
