THE Federal Government has moved to strengthen Australia’s fuel security, announcing new supply agreements and legislative changes aimed at improving reliability and easing cost pressures for households and businesses.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Ampol Lytton Refinery, with the Government citing ongoing global instability and pressure on fuel supply chains as key drivers behind the move.
New legislation passed last week will allow fuel companies to bring additional supply into Australia, boosting the nation’s resilience against international disruptions.
The changes also enable companies with commercial agreements in place to secure additional spot cargoes with government support when opportunities arise.
As part of the broader push, Ampol and Viva Energy have signed new agreements to deliver extra fuel shipments to Australia.
The additional supply is expected to flow through to service stations nationwide, improving reliability and reducing the risk of shortages during periods of global uncertainty.
The Government said the move reinforces the importance of local infrastructure, including the Lytton refinery, in maintaining stable supply chains while supporting jobs in the region.
It also pointed to cost-of-living relief measures, including fuel tax cuts, as part of its broader response to rising household expenses.
Kara Cook, Federal Member for Bonner, said the changes would deliver both immediate and longer-term benefits for local families.
“Cost of living is front of mind for so many families in Bonner right now, and fuel prices are a big part of that,” she said.
“By securing more fuel supply here in Australia, we’re helping take pressure off prices and giving families a bit more certainty every time they fill up.
“Securing Australia’s fuel supply isn’t abstract, it’s happening right here in Bonner at the Lytton Refinery.
“This is about backing local jobs, strengthening our energy security, and making sure families and businesses can rely on affordable, accessible fuel.”
