A man could face further charges after being accused of carrying out a stabbing murder near a shopping centre and trying to rape a young woman a short time later.

Ronald Bruce Murray, 45, faced Cleveland Magistrates Court on Monday after being charged over the death of a 44-year-old man early the previous morning.

Police allege the victim sustained stab wounds near a shopping centre car park at the Brisbane bayside suburb of Manly West.

A large number of officers were called to the scene, where they found the 44-year-old with critical injuries from a “brutal and violent attack”, Detective Inspector Wayne Francis said on Sunday.

Murray, from the nearby suburb of Wynnum, allegedly fled the shopping centre on foot before grabbing an 18-year-old woman and trying to sexually assault her on a nearby street about 2am.

He has been charged with murder, assault with intent to commit rape, committing an indecent act in a public place and obstructing a police officer.

Murray was not required to personally appear in court from custody, his solicitor Brittany White told magistrate Deborah Vasta.

“All charges need to be placed before court together,” Ms White said.

The police prosecutor told Ms Vasta she agreed to all the charges remaining before the court at Cleveland.

“There’s going to be more charges … that predate this (alleged) offending,” the prosecutor said.

A member of the public intervened during the alleged assault on the woman and called officers, who quickly responded and arrested Murray at the scene, police said.

The teen was transported to Redlands Hospital for treatment.

The alleged victim was from the Manly West area but police were unable to say on Sunday whether he knew his accused attacker.

Ms Vasta adjourned the matter to October 14 and remanded Murray in custody.
