An upgrade of the Russell Island ferry terminal car park has hit a new milestone with Redland City Council confirming visitors can now make use of 64 additional parking spaces at the site.

The $1.98m project is being completed in three stages to reduce impacts on residents and prevent the loss of parking during construction.

Upgrades include wildlife-friendly LED lighting, raised pathways and a new roundabout for improved traffic flow.

Cr Edwards said careful planning meant there would be no net loss of parking during the final two stages of construction.

“As stage one opens, works will transfer to the second stage located in the middle of the car park,” he said.

“Access to the car park will also move to Hawthornden Drive and overall completion of the facility is expected in mid-2023.

Mayor Karen Williams said the car park upgrades coupled with the new ferry terminal would transform the commuter experience.

“Russell Island will be able to cater to residents and throw out the welcome mat to visitors like never before with this comprehensive upgrade,” she said.

The state is also injecting $650,536 into the project through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme.
