The annual Mater Chicks in Pink Fun Run was held in Brisbane on Sunday March 10 and while many Redlanders trained into South Bank, dozens of locals met at the Cleveland Point to complete the walk virtually and raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.

Women, men, children, and pets came together on Sunday morning to complete their respective walks, jogs and runs for charity, and many nominated specific individuals they dedicated their walk to.

The Sea of Pink that took over the story bridge and main streets in Brisbane CBD also stretched down to the Redlands due to the hard work of the Cancer Council Redlands Branch and volunteers.

Cr Wendy Boglary, patron of the Cancer Council Redlands Volunteer Branch (CCRVB), said it was amazing to see so many turn up on Sunday morning for the walk.

“It was a great atmosphere to be around,” she said.

“There were many friends and families that came and helped out… they all supported this beautiful community event together.

“This walk helped promote awareness of breast cancer, support research and the hard work of our community groups like the Cancer Council.”

Jill Watson, CCRVB volunteer marketing officer said a lot of hard work was put into the morning, and she thanked the community groups that came to support the FunRunners.

“This was our third year of hosting a virtual walk in the Redlands,” she said.

“The Brisbane walk from Southbank was sold out, so we came together in Cleveland and walked around Raby Bay and back to the lighthouse.

“I think this year, our turnout grew by another 30 or 40 people and there were many businesses and clubs who had teams take part in the walks and run.”

The Mater Chicks in Pink was completed all around Australia and had a record-breaking crowd that raised $1.82 million as of Monday March 11.

The Mater Chicks in Pink team issued a thank you to everyone who donned pink on Sunday and took part in any walk, jog or run in support of breast cancer research and celebrated all who dressed up in tutus, leis and fun accessories for the occasion.
