In 2022, Grade three, Mount Cotton State School student Maiya Noetzel emerged victorious in the Mount Cotton’s Got Talent competition. Her win was attributed to an original composition—a blend of lyrics and piano, showcasing her musical gifts.

Afterwards, a chance encounter at a local cafe between Maiya, her family and relief teacher Mr. Blackburn, a respected figure among the school community, also recognized for his skill in crafting intricate balloon animals, resulted in further creative inspiration for Maiya.

Impressed by Maiya’s creative flair, Mr Blackburn playfully suggested she craft a song about him, Mr. Blackburn, teasing that it might catapult him to radio fame.

A year passed, and Maiya, true to her promise, debuted her piece titled “Mr. Blackburn” at the 2023 Mount Cotton’s Got Talent (Junior). Performing with finesse, she surprised everyone, especially Mr. Blackburn, with a song combined with a visual ode in the form of a lyrical movie backdrop. The judges recognized her talent by shortlisting her as a finalist.

The final performance saw Maiya gracing the stage, with a hand-drawn depiction of Mr. Blackburn on her shirt.

Following a heartwarming rendition, Maiya emerged victorious once again. Her win not only celebrated her musical flair but also honored the teacher who inspired her creative journey.

Dedicated to Mr Blackburn – Mt Cotton relief teacher

(Mr Blackburn
With a smile
We only see him
Once in a while

When I turn
I see his happy face
I want to know
Did you come from outer space?

Mr Blackburn
On the moon
Eating choc-mint ice-cream
Without a spoon

He floats up
With doggy shaped balloons
I want to go on
A journey with you

Mr Blackburn
He likes to teach
I bet he’d rather be
Relaxing on the beach

He goes round the planets
Round the sun and moon
He goes round the planets
Making doggy balloons

Making giraffe balloons
Making dinosaur balloons
Mr Blackburn, see you soon!
