Dr Laming confirms mayoral candidacy

Former federal MP Andrew Laming has confirmed his intention to run for Mayor, to focus on juvenile crime, congestion, living costs and Hospital chaos.

Dr Laming said Council desperately needed, direction, energy and policy expertise to get an ailing City moving again.

He claimed Redland families simply aren’t getting the service and value they need and expect.

“Redlands was once the heart of policy ideas, tax cuts, road duplications and hospital upgrades.

I made that happen over two decades representing my party.

Now working as an eye surgeon, I can see the paralysis in Redlands:

The street crime, hospital chaos, congestion and living costs.”

“I trust Redlanders will back my years of serving locals one by one when the needed me and I will drop my party membership because it plays no role at local level.

Dr Laming listed billion-dollar pharmaceutical reform, founding School chaplaincy, federal CCTV funding and the 5% home deposit scheme as reform ideas he turned to reality in Government.

“I found a way to make pharmaceuticals affordable for everyone, to home and employ Labor’s homeless Tent City in Capalaba, to get over 60,000 young renters into their first home and most important of all, deliver tax cuts in every term I was in government.

“Locals know two things. I am available 24/7 to call things out and get them fixed.

They also know I can wrangle solutions out of all three levels of government when the City needs it.”

“In the last ten years, the only completed road duplications in Redlands have been Laming-driven. The only hospital upgrades have been Laming-driven. Green-sealing on the bay islands had ground to a halt until Laming small grants resuscitated the program in 2016.

The Birkdale land is one of only two Commonwealth land disbursements; it took me 15years.

But it generated a new conversation about what we want to happen along our Brisbane border.

“I want a complete review of the Labor Olympic fiasco.

I have led the #SaveTheGabba and opening Leslie Harrison Dam campaign because our priority now must be affordability.

Redlands needs a high-capacity Mayor guiding a complex organisation, without losing touch with what bothers locals; controlling crime, cost of living, congestion and the chaos of Redland Hospital.

On Toondah, he said,

We have become a national laughingstock for allowing outsiders to feud over 500metres of mudflat, for a decade.

Dr Laming said Council must not be ‘forever job.’ “I stepped away from Canberra after six undefeated elections where locals repeatedly made Redlands the highest voting margin electorate across greater Brisbane.

Dr Laming is committed to his old style of campaigning:

Roadsides, doorknocking, stump speeches without notes, and getting involved in all levels of Government.
