In a thrilling encounter at Gold Coast Stadium, Gold Coast United secured a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Wynnum Wolves FC in their Queensland NPL clash.
The match saw Gold Coast United make a powerful comeback after falling behind early in the game.
Wolves got off to a blistering start and took a fourth-minute lead.
Lucas Martins was the scorer for the visitors, cutting inside a defender from the left before firing strongly past the Gold Coast goalkeeper.
United, however, did not let this early setback rattle it, and fought back, creating several opportunities.
Its persistence paid off in the 42nd minute when Fraser Hills levelled the scores, with the match entering the break all square at 1-1.
The second half was all Gold Coast United, as its players came out with renewed energy. It quickly took control, and the pressure paid off with two goals in two minutes through Chris Lucas (66’) and Nicholas Panetta (68’).
Despite some late pressure from Wynnum Wolves, Gold Coast United remained resolute at the back and held on.
Before the match, Wynnum Wolves president Rabieh Krayem was not happy with the poor state of the pitch and registered an official complaint to Football Queensland.
“We played on the worst pitch I have ever seen,” he said.
“It was an absolute disgrace, and the game should not have gone ahead on that surface. It was bumpy and chopped up. I rang the three most senior people at Football Queensland before the game and left a message to complain.”
The result might not have been what Wolves had hoped for, but on a positive note, Edward Hill and Hayden Stanley made their debuts.
