“It was one of those moments where people realised that football was more than just a game.”

The Ipswich and Redlands football community have united to rally behind a Capalaba footballer who survived an injury during a recent match.

During an accidental tackle, Capalaba Bulldogs footballer Alex Hastings came away with a compressed Spinal Cord at C5/C6 concussion in the Round 3 FQPL1 game against Ipswich

In the 65th minute of the match, Hastings experienced a forceful push into the knees of an Ipswich player, which caused his body to twist and left him in agony on the field.

Father and Head Coach Brian Hastings said he knew it was serious when his son was unable to feel his legs.

“We pinched his legs really hard and when he had no response, I felt very helpless as a parent,” he said.

Mr Hastings said his immediate concern was envisioning his son’s future.

My mind was racing a million miles and all I could think about was ramps and wheelchairs,

Whilst waiting 20 minutes for the ambulance, Mr Hastings noted the incredible compassion and support from the Ipswich side.

“The entire team from Ipswich FC waited on the sideline.

Everyone clapped and cheered when the ambulance left.

“We also had a spectator, who happened to be a nurse, rush onto the field to offer assistance.”

In a display of sportsmanship, Ipswich FC decided to erase the score despite leading 2-1.

“That is something that ultimately stood out to me, as there was a possibility the result would still stand but Ipswich was happy to do a replay,” Mr Hastings said.

“The way Ipswich FC reacted was unbelievable and you could not have asked for better service.”

Following a five-day hospital stay, Alex is currently recuperating at home.

He is expected to wear a neck brace for a period of two to six months, contingent upon his recovery.

“I see Alex lying on the couch playing PlayStation and I am reminded of how blessed we are,” Mr Hastings said.
