Greenacres Caravan Park has been at full capacity for nine months as it caters for residents who have been unable to secure a rental in the Redlands.

The Sheldon-based venue is the only caravan park in Redlands and offers a variety of accommodation types including caravan and camping sites, cabins and villas.

Manager Debbie Dawson said she had been receiving up to 70 phone calls every day from people trying to find accommodation.

“I need a secretary to help the secretary with the number of calls we are receiving,” she said.

“I’ve had to put a message on my answering machine telling people that we have nothing available.”

Ms Dawson said availability depended on whether people staying at the park were successful in securing a rental.

“I have people that have been here for 18 months and are still applying for rentals,” she said.

The state government has progressed 71 projects across Queensland to the next stage of assessment under the Housing Investment Fund (HIF) to assist with easing the crisis.

The HIF is part of a record $5bn for social and affordable housing to help deliver 13,500 homes by 2027.

Ms Dawson said she was struggling with how to advise residents on what to do with the current housing crisis.

“I keep advising people who are wanting to sell their homes and look for a rental to not go through with it, as there is nowhere to go,” she said.

Redlands estate agent Hayley Van de Ven said open homes were being capped at 20 people because of the high interest

“It is also quite panic inducing for people to arrive and see a massive line out of the house,” she said.

Ms Van de Ven said that because Redlands was a desirable location for families, they were the group that had been hit the hardest by the rental crisis.

“Family homes in particular are being snapped up very quickly.”

She said affordability was a significant factor that had been contributing to the rental crisis in Redlands.
