RUSSELL Island is full of surprises and En Plein Air, the latest exhibition at RICArts Arthouse and Gallery, is one of the best reasons to find them.

It’s a show where 11 local artists turn the everyday landscape into something extraordinary, revealing the unseen energy, movement, and emotion that surrounds the island.

Exhibiting artist, Siobhan Demeester, meets with fellow like-minded artists every Thursday, describing art as a nourishing and educational passion she simply can’t live without.

“Working on En Plein Air is about more than copying what’s in front of you,” she said.

“It’s tuning in, feeling the breeze, listening to the birds, watching how the light shifts, and letting all of that flow onto the canvas.”

Gallery Exhibition Co-ordinator and Curator, Jane Hooper, said the Halloween opening brought locals and visitors together, some in costume, celebrating both the creative spirit of the island and the playful magic of the season.

“Russell Island has so many talented artists and if the beauty of the island doesn’t inspire you, the locals certainly will,” she said.

“RICArts invites everyone to step in and experience creativity that’s alive in the land, the light, and the island spirit.”

For anyone from Brisbane looking for a day that mixes art, adventure, and island charm, the exhibition is a perfect excuse to hop on the ferry, wander through the gallery, and indulge at one of the island’s cafés.

With views of the bay, unexpected moments of beauty, and art that invites you to see the world differently, En Plein Air is a creative escape that dares you to see Russell Island differently.

En Plein Air runs until November 10 at the Russell Island Community Arts Centre (RICArts), open daily 9.30am – 12.30pm.
