Volunteer Marine Rescue Victoria Point is giving Redlands boaties 24/7 assistance and peace of mind while out on the water.

VMR Victoria Point has been saving lives and assisting the boating public across Redlands for more than 40 years.

Executive officer Del Mirams said their primary mission was the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

“Unfortunately, a lot of people buy boats without knowing what they are doing or where they are going,” he said.

“We’re here to save lives, it is as simple as that.”

The marine rescue is a community not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers and relies heavily on memberships to fund operations.

Memberships are currently $88 per year compared to non-member rates for assistance charging $200 an hour.

Mr Mirams said the VMR gave protection to anybody on the water 24/7 from Bribie Island to Southport as well as providing radio courses for boaties.

“Anything to do with boating or the water we can help and if we can’t, we find out,” Mr Mirams said.

“If you ever have any inquiries about boat servicing, where the fish are biting, where you can and cannot go, the weather, radio communication and so on, we’ve got you covered.”

With more than 250,000 registered boats and countless canoe and kayak enthusiasts in Queensland, Mr Mirams said most volunteer organisations were in a never-ending quest for funding and were always on the hunt for more volunteers.

“Without volunteers, we don’t go,” he said.

Mr Mirams said volunteering at the VMR was great for people who liked the water and wanted to get involved.

“You never know where you are going to be and what you are going to be doing from one hour to the next,” he said.

VMR Victoria Point is always looking for volunteers and can be contacted on 3207 8717 or [email protected].
