Council hits the high notes with quirky, song-filled mowing announcement

Redland City Council has raised more eyebrows with an unusually quirky media release that opened not with facts or figures — but with a reworked version of Steppenwolf’s Born to Be Wild.

“Get your motor mower runnin’, head out on the fairway… We were lawn, lawn to be wild,” the statement began, before launching into a full verse of lawn-themed lyrics.

The unusual introduction was used to promote Council’s summer mowing efforts, with staff warning residents that this year’s hot and humid weather is fuelling rapid grass growth across the city.

In the release, Council said locals could expect to hear “puttering mowers and buzzing whipper snippers” more often as crews tackle more than 19,000 hectares of public space — an area it noted is larger than Moreton Island’s 18,600 hectares.

Maintenance teams are also slashing and mowing close to 500 hectares of vegetated areas each week, the equivalent of about 290 cricket fields.

Residents were urged to be patient as workers push through an unusually heavy workload, with Council explaining that mowing and whipper-snipping teams often operate separately for safety reasons.

In peak times, whipper-snipping and pathway blow-offs may happen the following day.

“So don’t panic. It hasn’t been missed,” the release assured.

Council advised residents to report urgent maintenance issues by calling 3829 8999 or lodging a request through its website.

The musically inspired approach has left some locals scratching their heads — but at least one thing is clear: Redlands’ grass is growing fast, and crews are going full throttle to keep up.
