JUST a short ferry ride from the mainland, Club Macleay on Macleay Island is emerging as a go-to spot for foodies and day-trippers seeking a relaxed escape with unbeatable waterfront views.
Far from being just a bowls club, Club Macleay has carved out a reputation as a vibrant social hub.
Catering Manager Alec Smith said the onsite bistro was becoming a reason for people to hop on the ferry.
“We do pizzas on a Monday and Tuesday, and then we have the bistro from Wednesday through to Sunday. We do lunch and dinner – seven days a week,” Mr Smith said.
“We also do coffee and cake from 10am, with the Bistro from 11.30am for lunch and 5.30pm for dinner.”
The menu is broad and enticing, featuring everything from fresh seafood to burgers and steaks, with a constantly changing specials board to keep regulars and visitors coming back.
“We’ve got a highly rotating specials board too, so each time you come into the club, you’re going to see something different,” Mr Smith said.
“And then we’ve also got a bar menu that runs in the afternoon.
“An antipasto board, chicken bites – stuff like that.
“With our menu, you can see we’ve tried to go for good, wholesome club food.”
Affordability is also key to the club’s appeal.
“That’s one of our mantras – good quality food at a good quality price,” Mr Smith said.
In addition to the fresh approach to food, the bistro has recently had a physical facelift.
“Over here you can see all the new lights and the new bistro bar,” Mr Smith said.
“We’ve tried to keep it quite casual.
“You walk into some clubs that have had a $10 million renovation and it’s quite sterile. We wanted to keep our character.”
Getting there is easier than many visitors expect.
Macleay Island is just a short ferry trip from Redland Bay’s Weinam Creek Marina, with the terminal wheelchair accessible and the club’s courtesy bus operating for pick-ups and drop-offs.
“The courtesy bus runs every half hour,” Mr Smith said. “The bus runs seven days a week from 10.30am until late with limited capacity on Monday and Tuesday, but if you call the club on 3409 5344 and ask to speak to the bus booking, they’ll connect you through and sort it out.”
With its warm hospitality, great value food and one of the best vantage points in the Redlands, Club Macleay is now firmly on the map for those looking for a relaxing island day out.
