Unknown to most people, nestled in the heart of Cleveland, the Donald Simpson Community Centre has been a vital hub for the local community for more than 36 years.

Centre chief executive Thomas Jithin said: “The centre’s mission is to empower the community by providing a welcoming space where individuals of all ages and backgrounds can access the resources and support they need to thrive.”

Board chairman Tony Christinson said the centre was purposely built as the Over 50s Leisure Centre but changed its name to Community Centre to broaden its appeal to members of all ages.

“We still focus on seniors’ wellbeing and provide a range of activities, day trips, concerts, expos and meals to improve quality of life and to help reduce social isolation,” he said.

The centre is managed by its board and a dedicated team of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone who walks through its doors.

With a membership base of over 2000 members, activities are scheduled between Monday and Saturday at the centre or members can join for day or away trips. The centre also operates a cafe which is open for morning tea and lunch.

The centre now welcomes members from all areas in Redlands and the islands but also from Brisbane, Logan and Gold Coast.

Two theatre groups stage shows at the centre, Mates Theatre Genesis and Crucible Productions.

The membership fee is $22 a year and activity fees range from mostly $5 per session with some provided by private, trained convenors for $12.
