BYD is preparing to expand its SUV line-up even further, with a new flagship three-row model set to eclipse the already sizeable Sealion 8.

Codenamed Dynasty-D, the upcoming SUV is being developed as a premium model within BYD’s mainstream range rather than its Denza luxury sub-brand, although it’s expected to offer a similarly upscale interior and feature set.

At over 5.2 metres long, the new SUV will sit above the 5040mm Sealion 8 and outstretch rivals such as the Hyundai Palisade (5060mm) and even full-size luxury offerings like BMW’s X7 (5181mm).

First unveiled as a near-production concept at the 2025 Shanghai motor show, the Dynasty-D previewed a high-end cabin featuring bamboo inlays, gold-leaf detailing and a multi-screen infotainment suite. BYD has yet to confirm its powertrain, but both fully electric and plug-in hybrid options are likely.

One strong candidate is BYD’s latest DM 5.0 plug-in hybrid system, pairing a 1.5-litre petrol engine with dual electric motors and offering up to 200km of electric-only range, according to Chinese reports.

Despite appearing almost showroom-ready, BYD has delayed the model’s launch. Originally slated for release before the end of 2025, the Dynasty-D is now set to debut in China between April and June 2026 as the company continues refining the vehicle amid intense competition in the domestic SUV market.

The production model is expected to join BYD’s Dynasty Series, which sits above the more youth-oriented Ocean Series in terms of luxury and specification. Six and seven-seat configurations will be offered, with business-focused layouts featuring reclining “zero gravity” captain’s chairs with heating, ventilation and massage functionality anticipated on higher trims.

In Australia, BYD’s line-up continues to grow, with the recent arrival of the Atto 2 and Sealion 7, plus the upcoming Sealion 5 and Sealion 8. The Sealion 8 will compete with the Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Kluger and Mazda CX-80, with pricing expected to start below $60,000.

Local plans for the Dynasty-D remain unconfirmed, although its premium positioning could make it a compelling, road-focused alternative to Denza’s off-road-capable offerings.
