The Mater Private Hospital Redland fundraising auxiliary aims to provide funds to support patient care and comfort.

And in so doing, about 140 people enjoyed its annual 80s themed trivia night held on May 26 at the Redlands Sporting Club.

The night was one of four major annual fund raisers with a pie drive to be held in June, fashion parade in September and RPAC Christmas markets.

Next year, for the first time, the auxiliary will stage an International Women’s Day breakfast on March 8.

President Lorraine Furness said she had been involved for the past three years and president for the past year and viewed the auxiliary as her way of giving back.

“We are a close-knit group and I really enjoy the company. I also love the fact that every cent stays local,” she said.

The group’s largest and most recent purchase was a wheelchair accessible vehicle to take patients to X-ray appointments or to access homes of people undergoing rehabilitation prior to discharge.

Other purchases have included a treadmill for rehabilitation, chemotherapy chairs, a healing garden for families and patients, shower chairs, aids and equipment.

“We help out with anything to enhance patient support that are not covered by the hospital budget,” Ms Furness said.

The auxiliary meets monthly and has been running for about 20 years.

General Manager of Mater Private Redlands Chris Junge said the work of the group was “nothing short of phenomenal”.

“The equipment brought enhances the patients’ hospital experience,” he said.
