SMALL VS. LARGE BOATS IN MORETON BAY

The size of the boat is an important consideration when navigating Moreton Bay. Small boats, such as runabouts, center consoles, and tinnies, are highly popular for their maneuverability and ease of launching from ramps. They are ideal for exploring the sheltered waters of the bay, as they can navigate shallow areas and access remote fishing spots. Many anglers use these boats for fishing in creeks and estuaries where larger vessels cannot go. Small boats are also budget-friendly. However, larger boats like cabin cruisers and catamarans provide greater comfort and are suited for longer trips.

These boats offer more space for passengers and extra gear. Larger boats can also handle choppier conditions, which can be encountered when exploring the open waters around Moreton and Stradbroke Islands. While they require deeper water for launching and anchoring, their stability and onboard amenities make them an attractive option.

BOATS FOR ANGLERS

The Bay has excellent fishing opportunities. Small center console boats are popular because they provide 360-degree access around the boat, making it easy to cast lines and reel in fish. These boats are suited for targeting species such as flathead, snapper, and whiting in the sheltered inshore waters of Moreton Bay.

Open boats and tinnies are also widely used for fishing in creeks and along the shoreline. For offshore fishing or deeper areas of the bay, larger boats like offshore center consoles or fishing-specific vessels with cabins are ideal.
