A Birkdale woman has turned her love for art into creating a supportive and relaxing space for struggling individuals through sculpturing classes.

Sculpturing stands as one of the oldest forms of artistic expression, and in 2024, Georgette Schwantes is remodelling the ancient art into 21st century forms.

Born in Egypt and educated privately in London, Georgette showed early artistic talent, resulting in a bursary to Art College. She went onto complete a Fine Art degree at Ealing College of the Arts in the UK,

For the past 50 years, Georgette has practised as a sculptor and her work has sold into private and company collections throughout the world.

Regardless of timeframes, Georgette is still totally engaged with her artwork.

“To me, sculpturing is like no other art form,” she said.

“When I am working with my clay, I lose myself in it, time stands still, five hours can fly by, and it can feel like five minutes.”

Georgette now shares the magic of moulding, shaping, and carving by teaching sculpturing classes privately at her studio gallery in Birkdale.

She said she believes the most beneficial part you would derive from sculpting is the therapeutic effects compared to sitting cross-legged contemplating your navel.

“I have a lot of students who have cancer, are going through a divorce, have depression or anxiety.

It is very rewarding to hear how much sculpturing has helped them and their mental health,” she said.

Having taught in Birkdale for 23 years, Ms Schwantes said her favourite thing was the feeling she felt from helping people.

“I get a tremendous feeling sort of like a boomerang back to me when people who lack confidence are amazed at what they create,” she said.

Sculpture student Michaela Cosijn joined Georgette’s classes about three years ago during COVID.

Michaela said: “Georgette creates a very special environment which is both stimulating and creative but also safe to destress and have fun, she said.
