THE Bay Islands have erupted in a crime crackdown, with police charging 11 people with 24 offences during a high-octane blitz that’s left locals stunned.
Dubbed by residents online as the “Pablo Escobar of the Bay Islands”, one alleged kingpin’s hideout was smashed in a raid on Sentosa Tce, Macleay Island, on September 18.
Inside, officers allegedly uncovered a hydro tent pumping out cannabis, and a stash of fireworks.
A 66-year-old woman and a 28-year-old woman were both slapped with adult cautions for possessing dangerous drugs and utensils.
The younger woman also copped a caution for unlawfully possessing explosives.
The raids were part of a week-long blitz across Macleay, Stradbroke and Russell Islands, with general duties police backed up by the Dog Squad, Tactical Crime Unit, Child Protection officers and detectives from the mainland.
Detective Inspector Wayne Francis said residents of the Redlands Coast could expect more policing operations on the islands in addition to regular Jack’s Law wandings to ensure communities are safe and feel safe.
“The islands are unique in being in close proximity to the capital city but almost having a regional policing environment,” he said.
“It’s a key priority for police in Brisbane’s south to ensure our proactive policing presence is seen and felt on both the islands and the mainland to maintain community safety.
“These operations are an important part of how our specialist police units investigate and disrupt criminal offences on the Bay Islands, such as the supply of illicit drugs to the more vulnerable in our community.
“These operations occur in addition to the day-to-day work police based on the islands conduct.”
Locals say the blitz sends a loud warning to wannabe drug lords who think the islands are an easy hideout.
Police are promising more raids are on the horizon.
