IF WELLINGTON Point fisherman Adam Neeson wants to re-live a fishing experience, he can check YouTube where he posts videos of them all.
“That way, I can let people know what’s out there,” Adam said.
Adam, 41, aims to fish every weekend, but actually gets out at least fortnightly.
“I fish every which way – off shore, in shore. I fish whiting or marlin,” he said.
His boat is a 6m plate Bar Crusher which takes him everywhere he needs to go.
“It’s been on Somerset Dam, the Logan River, 1770, the Great Barrier Reef. I can sleep on it or I can just take it out for the day. I like to keep my options open. I’ll go where the weather allows me to go,” he said.
Prior to purchasing this boat, Adam fished from a 3.7m tinnie, used for chasing whiting, bream and flathead.
Adam said his favourite fishing destination was Lucinda in North Queensland, off Hinchinbrook Island. The island is known for its 32km Thorsborne trail and is uninhabited.
He said he also enjoyed fishing offshore out from Stradbroke and Moreton islands and even fishing for squid in winter from local jetties.
A member of the Redland Bay Amateur Fishing Club, Adam usually fishes with a mate or his wife.
“My mate loves it and my wife tolerates it for me,” he said.
He said his most memorable catch was a 16.5kg wahoo, caught off Stradbroke Island on his 40th birthday.
“It was the best way to spend a birthday. A fish that size goes like the clappers and to land one that’s 16.5kg is quite an achievement. It is a very cool fish to catch,” he said.
Adam said he enjoyed the relaxation of fishing.
“It clears the head. Fishing takes me to some cool places. It allows me to spend time there. I’ve seen whales and dolphins, turtles and dugongs. I’ve seen things most people could only dream of and I’ve seen them up close.”
