E-bikes are becoming an increasingly popular way to get around Bayside and the Redlands. Whether you’re commuting to work, exploring the beautiful coastline, or simply enjoying a leisurely ride, e-bikes offer a convenient and eco-friendly alternative to traditional transport.
However, as with any mode of transport, safety is key. Here are some essential tips to ensure you stay safe while riding your e-bike.
Know the Rules
Here in Queensland, riders of legal e-bikes must follow the same rules as standard bicycles.
However, the community is reminded to be aware that e-bikes do have additional requirements to be legally compliant, including:
- Pedals must be the primary source of power – the motor provides assistance only
- The motor can only assist up to 25km/h – the bicycle can only be ridden faster under human power
- The motor may only have a maximum continuous output of 250 watts. The motor output should be printed on the compliance sticker.
Police have observed an increase in devices that may appear to be e-bikes, but are in fact illegal motorbikes.
They are banned from use and riders (or parents) can face significant penalties totalling more than $1,640.
You can’t ride your device on a path or road if it has any of these:
- Internal combustion engine – e-bikes must have an electric motor
- Throttle powered only – Throttle power is permitted at speeds up to 6km/h to get started. After this you must pedal to activate the motor assistance
- High powered motors – High powered devices with a motor more than 250 watts are not permitted. High powered devices that are locked to lower limits are still illegal.

Be Visible and Predictable
Make sure you’re visible to other road users by wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially during early mornings or evenings.
Use lights and reflectors on your e-bike, and always signal your intentions clearly when turning or stopping.
Stay Alert
The Bayside and Redlands areas are known for their scenic routes, but they can also be busy with cars, pedestrians, and other cyclists.
Stay focused on your surroundings, avoid distractions like your phone, and always ride defensively.
Maintain Your E-Bike
Regularly check your e-bike’s brakes, tyres, and battery to ensure it’s in good working condition. A well-maintained bike is a safer bike.
By following these tips, you can enjoy the many benefits of e-bikes while keeping yourself and others safe. Happy riding!
The Queensland Police Service is committed to reducing the number of lives lost on our roads.
Data shows that serious crashes can be significantly reduced when drivers recognise and avoid the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviours: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.
