THE Redlands community has demonstrated the power of unity, as local support helped four students from The Industry School embark on a life-changing trip to Cambodia as part of the school’s International Service Project (ISP).
Angus, Bowen, Tyce, and George from Redlands joined The Industry School students from Brisbane and the Gold Coast as part of Team 1, tasked with building a home for a Cambodian family in partnership with New Hope Cambodia.
Their journey, however, began months before with incredible support from the Redlands community to make their trip possible.
The students organised a successful barbecue at Seasons IGA Cleveland, with IGA generously donating most of the goods.
All four students were hands-on at the event, showcasing their dedication and sense of community.
Tyce secured support from the Cleveland Rotary, presenting to their committee and, in exchange for a donation, working at the Rotary Australia Repurposing Equipment (RARE) facility in Alexandra Hills.
Victoria Point Rotary also supported each of the Redlands students with donations towards their fundraising.
These efforts, along with various sausage sizzles and other fundraising activities, demonstrated the power of community coming together.
The four young people from the Redlands school raised $22,600 between them with the support of the local community for the project.
The staff at The Industry School also played a pivotal role in supporting students and their peers on this journey.
Teachers and staff offered mentorship and encouragement throughout the fundraising process, ensuring a successful and impactful experience.
Their commitment to the personal growth and professional development of these young people was instrumental in making the journey possible.
The success of this project was further made possible through the leadership of Shane Summers, Gold Coast builder and work project leader.
The contributions of major sponsors and supporters MEGT, Bosch, and Jetpilot ensured the students had the tools, uniforms, and resources they needed to make a lasting impact in Cambodia.
“The incredible support from the Redlands community, combined with the dedication of our staff and industry partners, has made this project possible,” said Redlands principal and Team 1 Leader Michael Callanan.
“From businesses like IGA and Cleveland/Victoria Point Rotary to sponsors like MEGT, Bosch, and Jetpilot, everyone has come together to empower these young people and create a meaningful impact in Cambodia.”
While in Cambodia, the students built a home and left a legacy.
They worked on upgrading facilities at New Hope School and building a new library for the school.
They also had the honour of participating in a traditional Cambodian blessing ceremony, which symbolised the positive impact they had on the local community.
This unforgettable experience is a testament to the power of community, the leadership of The Industry School’s staff, and the generosity of sponsors.
