On Wednesday, October 11, during Australia’s Mental Health Awareness Week, the Redlands Coast Chamber of Commerce held the biggest connected business breakfast event for the year: Keeping your Workplace Healthy – Mental Health Awareness in the Workplace.
The event provided the opportunity for the Chamber to supply and inform the local business community of resources available to them, their colleagues and their staff, including but not limited to mental health apps, resource booklets, Mental Health First Aid courses, support helplines, free Health Checks in the Medibank SulliVan van and more.
Research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals that one in five Australians will experience a mental health problem in any given year, and within the workplace, these challenges can manifest in various ways, affecting productivity, employee well-being and overall company morale.
That means that every person is likely to know someone who is experiencing a mental health problem, whether that is a family member, a friend or colleague.
In fact, mental illness is now said to affect every Australian either directly or indirectly. This makes mental health everybody’s business and demonstrates the need for community care models that empower individuals where they live, work and play.
Fostering mental health awareness has become an essential practice in Australia, with the understanding of mental health in the workplace being not just an obligation by employers and employees, but also a vital stride towards a healthier, happier and more prosperous society.
In today’s fast-paced world, stress and mental health challenges are increasingly common, so it is crucial that we take a step back and consider the well-being of not only our businesses but also ourselves and our colleagues.
Understanding the human aspect of mental health is pivotal. By fostering an environment where employees feel heard and supported, businesses can not only improve its workplace culture but also enhance its customer service, resonating positively within the community.
Challenges in addressing mental health in the workplace can vary. Limited resources, lack of awareness, and the fear of stigma are significant hurdles. Small businesses, although enthusiastic about supporting their staff, might find it daunting to initiate mental health programs due to financial constraints. Recognising these challenges is the first step toward overcoming them.
To bridge this gap, local communities and businesses can collaborate. Initiatives like subsidised mental health workshops, can make a substantial difference. The Redlands Coast Chamber of Commerce has taken its steps, in this regard, recently putting six of its staff and volunteers through Australian accredited Mental Health Training, in an effort to aide and support the businesses on the Redlands Coasts more effectively. Led by local training provider; Your First Aid, Germaine Lecci is a qualified trainer and assessor in health and mental health and is a vital connection for the business community.
As we move forward, let us remember that our businesses are not just economic entities but pillars of our communities. By embracing mental health awareness, we can transform challenges into opportunities, fostering an environment where everyone thrives.
