THE 50-cent fare initiative has been transformative for outer suburban regions like the Redlands – significantly increasing public transport usage and easing road congestion, particularly for commuters travelling to and from work.
In a time of rising household expenses, this program has delivered meaningful cost-of-living relief, especially for our island communities who rely daily on ferry services.
For many families, it’s put hundreds of dollars back into their budgets each year – stimulating the local economy and supporting everyday essentials.
For regular commuters, including young workers on low wages, the savings offer real financial breathing room – helping to cover groceries, utility bills or school costs.
One young resident shared that before the initiative, the cost of travelling to work had a major impact on their limited income.
In addition to being affordable, the initiative also enhances efficiency.
With more consistent train and bus services, the low fare makes public transport a more practical and time-saving option.
We strongly advocate for the extension of the 50-cent fare initiative and urge decision-makers to include all island communities – particularly North Stradbroke Island.
This presents a valuable opportunity for government to explore creative, forward-thinking solutions that provide fair and affordable transport access for all residents.
The benefits currently are threefold: immediate financial relief for households, reduced congestion and environmental impact, and improved access to jobs and education across our region.
Maintaining and expanding this initiative is a practical, community-focused step toward a more connected and sustainable Bayside and Redlands Coast.
